As followers of Jesus, we are called to love and serve others.

Jesus said: “Love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your mind. This is the first and greatest commandment.   And the second is like it: Love your neighbor as yourself.” – Matthew 22:37-39

What does caring look like?

At Grace, Jesus’s love is present in the way that we care for each other
and for people in our community. It is a friendly smile, a meal when
someone is sick, or resisting the urge to gossip about another.

What do we do together?

In partnership with local community group “Hanan’s Canadian Family,” we are working to bring a refugee family to Quebec. You can donate to that effort: here. Our quilting group makes quilts for people who are ill or struggling. The Book Club is a good forum for discussing contemporary justice issues. We support a foster child through PLAN Canada. Many groups, such as Theatre Wakefield and the Wakefield Grannies were rooted and begun in the church before taking on a life of their own. We serve local seniors in our seniors’ worship service. One newer justice commitment has been an acknowledgement of territory, made at the beginning of each worship service. Finally, we contribute to the United Church’s Mission and Service Fund. This fund supports education, health care, farming, sustainable development and youth empowerment in Canada and around the world.

What do we do as individuals?

Of course, the church is made of people. The people of Grace are involved in various activities in their own lives:

• Caring for children, grandchildren, and the elderly
• Checking in on neighbors and being a friend to those who are lonely
• Seniors’ housing and social events
• The food pantry
• Encouraging local authors, musicians and artists
• The Wakefield Grannies
• Helping with local suppers, fundraisers, bazaars, fairs and teas
• Right relations work
• Welcoming refugee families
• Library volunteering
• Prayer
• And more
